Outside the police station, Camille bounced from foot to foot to keep warm whilst she waited for Leila to use the bathroom. Things had gone better than she’d imagined with DI Shaw and, coupled with the cool night air, she felt wide awake and ready for action. What that action would entail, she didn’t know, but she was slap bang in the middle of this mission and her entire being was eager for what came next. It was better than sitting around waiting for the inevitable.

Unfortunately, as Leila emerged from the police station, she had a drawn expression on her face and, from the way she was walking, it was clear there’d be no investigative work going to take place that evening.

“Are you okay?” Camille asked as Leila joined her on the roadside.

“I’m just feeling a little deflated. I thought we had him.”

“We will get him. DI Shaw listened to what we had to say. And he seemed more open to the idea than last time. He said he’d look into it.”

“He was fobbing us off, Cam. I’m certain of it.”

Camille wasn’t as adamant about that as her friend, but she let it pass. It was getting late and her initial burst of energy on leaving the station was now fading fast.

“Do you want to stay over at my place?” she asked, gesturing down the road. “It’s only a short walk from here.”

Leila closed one eye. “No. It’s fine. Thanks. Where’s the nearest station?”

“Hackney Downs. But if you’re walking that far, you might as well come back to my place. Come on, it’s safer if we stick together, too.”

She hadn't considered this point before voicing it, but as the words left her mouth, she realised how true they were.

“We’ll be all right,” Leila said, nodding to a row of black cabs waiting across the street. “I’m going to jump in a cab. Want me to drop you off?” She seemed broken, like someone had drained all the vitality from her.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Camille asked.

“Yes! Stop asking me. Do you want a lift or not?”

She glanced down the street, hit with a sudden resolve. “No. I’ll walk. It’s only ten minutes and you’re going in the opposite direction. Plus, we can’t let that bastard get to us, can we? Otherwise, he’s won.”

Leila smiled. “Good point. Look, I’m sorry for being pathetic. I just feel shitty. I’m probably just tired or whatever. We’ll catch up soon though, yeah? Tomorrow?”

“No problem.” They said their goodbyes and Camille waited for Leila to cross over to the waiting taxis before turning around and heading for home.

As she walked down Amhurst Road, she was up in her head, thanking the cosmos for its help up to now and asking it once again to take care of her. She called on whoever or whatever was out there to help her step into her power and to continue watching out for her. It felt remarkably empowering as she strode along the deserted streets. Right now, she needed all the help she could get.
